Huge statement about Martin St-Louis involving Chantal Machabée, and it's confirmed that the Canadiens' coach never backs down
Martin St-Louis is known for always being available to the media, no matter what happens. He can sometimes be a bit curt, but overall, he's very generous.
However, when things are really bad and the team keeps losing, Chantal Machabée may question the coach's availability to the media. This happened in front of Marc-André Perreault (Mapper), who covered the Canadiens daily until last year for TVA Sports. He had quite a story to tell.
"Last year, the Canadiens had a catastrophic December (3-9-3), which culminated in a 6-3 loss in Nashville on January 3rd. It was heavy... it was hell.
On the morning of the game, with fellow journalists, we were waiting near the locker room. I can't remember if it was Charles or Chantal who was there for media relations, but we had agreed that we didn't need to talk to Martin. He had already had a lot on his plate and had been very available in the preceding days. The coach overheard the conversation and intervened. He said something like, 'It's not true that I'm going to hide. If someone has a question, I'll answer.'
In the end, he gave a generous press conference. It was his way of telling his guys that they should never shy away and that he was ready to take the heat of the moment. I will always respect Martin St-Louis for doing that. The cameras were off, so it wasn't for show. It was just the REAL Martin St-Louis." - Marc-André Perreault

Martin will never hide, and he will always be willing to take one for the team. This kind of gesture is talked about in a locker room and echoes throughout the NHL.
It's definitely one of the many reasons why players are proud to play for Martin St-Louis.
