Thanks to the Calgary Flames' victory over the Arizona Coyotes yesterday, the Montreal Canadiens' chances of securing a better draft pick have increased. It's official, led by Kent Hughes, the team has ensured they'll finish no higher than 26th in the NHL's overall standings.

According to the probabilities, the Canadiens cannot fall below the seventh-best odds of winning the Macklin Celebrini lottery. With two games left against the Detroit Red Wings, Martin St-Louis' men will finish between 26th and 28th place, depending on the results of the Arizona Coyotes and the Ottawa Senators.

This confirmation adds to the organization's likelihood of acquiring a high-quality prospect. Should the Canadiens surpass the Senators and the Coyotes by the end of the week, and no team ranked lower than the Canadiens sees their logo in the top 3 of the draft, they will have the 7th best prospect in the amateur draft.

La Presse sports journalist Simon-Olivier Lorange shared a sentiment that many fans are experiencing. The race to the bottom of the standings is thrilling for supporters.

"LOTTERY: Following the Calgary Flames' victory tonight, the Canadiens can no longer finish higher than 26th in the overall standings. And it has been a while since it was certain they couldn't drop below the 28th spot. I'm getting chills all over." - Simon-Olivier Lorange, La Presse

The Coyotes led 5-4 after the second intermission, but the Flames ultimately won 6-5 against the Arizona Coyotes in regulation time. An overtime victory would have been preferable, but fate decided otherwise.

Furthermore, with a regulation loss tonight against the Detroit Red Wings, Martin St-Louis' team could secure the 6th overall spot due to tiebreaker rules in case of a tie. The Ottawa Senators have two more points, but they have more regulation wins than the Canadiens.

It will be interesting to follow through tomorrow night!

Here's the current standings:

26 - OTTAWA - 76 POINTS IN 80 GAMES

27 - ARIZONA - 75 POINTS IN 81 GAMES

28 - MONTREAL - 74 POINTS IN 80 GAMES

Positions #25 and #29 are out of reach for the Canadiens, so it will come down to positions #26, #27, and #28.

With 26 games on the schedule until Thursday, approximately 10 of the 26 games played in the next four days will have a significant impact on the fate of the Canadiens or the playoff picture. Fanadiens will ensure to provide you with the best possible coverage of the stakes involved with different teams.

Stay tuned!
