We're all eager to see Lane Hutson in action in the NHL. However, as Dany Dubé mentions, he might never sign with the Canadiens.
The Canadiens need to sign him, and Kent Hughes has good arguments. Firstly, the Canadiens have a very bright future ahead. It will be very promising to play in Montreal in the coming years.
Furthermore, if Hutson signs this year, he saves a year of contract, so he can sign his second deal during the 2026-27 season. If he stays in college and becomes a free agent, he will have to start a new three-year cycle with his entry-level contract in two years, so he would sign his second deal in the NHL in 5 years instead of two.
These are strong arguments for Hughes, and we could add that Hutson's place is no longer in the NCAA. He dominated in his two campaigns with Boston University, and it's time for him to turn pro.
