Former Canadiens Coach Michel Therrien Announces Retirement in Heartfelt Interview
It was with calm and clarity that Michel Therrien officially announced his retirement on 98.5 FM.
Without regret or bitterness, and emphasizing that he wants to spend more time with his partner, Therrien says he feels the need to slow down and enjoy a life without a busy schedule or professional responsibilities.
"I decided.. I had it in my head for some time.. I am retiring.
I think I've reached that point in my life.
I had a good conversation this week with Louis-Philippe Neveu at TVA, who treated me very well during those three wonderful years.
I had been thinking about it for a few months, and then when you feel that you need to move on to another stage, you have to do it."
"We're spoiling ourselves. We're going to enjoy our time. We're going to Europe, and it's going to be extraordinary."
-Michel Therrien
Since leaving the NHL bench, Michel Therrien has never completely disappeared from the media landscape. He has occasionally appeared as a guest analyst on TVA Sports broadcasts, where his experience and frankness were always appreciated by viewers.
However, these occasional appearances seemed increasingly spaced out, perhaps a sign that the transition to full retirement had already begun.
Michel Therrien Confirms His Retirement and Fully Transitions to Media Work
In his long interview, which you can watch in the video below, we discovered a serene Michel Therrien, as we have rarely seen him.
A colorful, sometimes polarizing coach, Therrien left his mark with his passion, frank speaking, and robust style of play. Whether one was a supporter or a critic, it is hard to deny the impact he had on the Canadiens organization, as well as the Pittsburgh Penguins and other teams he collaborated with over the years.
Therrien leaves behind a full career and, above all, gives himself the freedom to enjoy a new stage of life, without whistles or spotlights. A well-deserved break for a man who has long lived at the fast pace of professional hockey.
