Two new names have just appeared on the NHL waiver wire, and this could very well catch the attention of Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens.
According to information shared by Elliotte Friedman, goaltender Spencer Martin and forward
Justin Kirkland are now available for free to all teams in the league.
"Kirkland (CAL) & Spencer Martin (NYR) on waivers" - Elliotte Friedman
After a rough start to the season in Russia, he was released and then signed a two-year contract with the Rangers, but he must first clear waivers before officially joining the team.
Spencer Martin and Justin Kirkland Placed on NHL Waivers
Spencer Martin has played 66 NHL games with the Canucks, Blue Jackets, and Hurricanes.
His stats are fairly modest: a record of 24 wins, 30 losses, and 8 ties, with a 3.56 goals-against average.
At 30 years old, I have to admit that he sometimes lacks consistency.
As for Justin Kirkland, he's 29 years old... another veteran!
Nicknamed "Costco," he's a big, versatile forward who can play both center and wing.
He spent the last two seasons with the Calgary Flames but was slowed down by a serious knee (ACL) injury that kept him out for much of last year.
Before that, I thought he performed well in the AHL, bringing plenty of energy and consistency.
In any case, it's often these low-risk opportunities that can pay off big later in the season.
We'll see if a GM decides to take a chance...
