A major trade that truly represents Kent Hughes and the Canadiens
We're starting to see Kent Hughes' trend when it comes to trades. He loves acquiring young players on the verge of breaking out, using draft picks.
He did it with
Alex Newhook, and previously with
Kirby Dach. In fact, a trade like the one involving Dach isn't out of the question for the upcoming draft.
Remember that Hughes traded
Alexander Romanov for the 13th overall pick from the Islanders, then traded that pick to the Blackhawks in return for Kirby Dach.
Well, the New Jersey Devils have outright announced that their 10th overall pick is available. That works out perfectly, as they need defensemen and Kent Hughes has some to spare!
So, the GM could pull off a similar move, trading the 10th overall pick for a defenseman and maybe another pick/prospect, then acquiring an established player.
Since 2022, we haven't seen such an announcement, when the Senators and Pierre Dorion announced that their 7th overall pick was available.
They eventually traded it for
Alex DeBrincat. This trade hasn't aged very well for the Sens, as the sharpshooter is now in Detroit.
Do you think Kent Hughes will pull another rabbit out of his hat? Will he try to acquire the 10th pick from the Devils? Will he trade his 5th pick to get immediate help, then select
Tij Iginla at the 10th spot?
We'll find out by June 28th, when the first round of the draft will be held, live from Las Vegas.
