Former Canadiens Defenseman Sheldon Souray Reveals Shocking Past After Overcoming His Personal Demons

Sheldon Souray had a brilliant NHL career from 1997 to 2013 and was a highly regarded player with the Montreal Canadiens.
This year, Souray agreed to give a rare interview and made shocking revelations about his past.
The native of Elk Point, Alberta, also had a powerful shot, and during his last season with the Montreal organization, the defenseman scored 26 goals and 64 points in 81 games.
A 3rd round pick, 71st overall, by the Devils in the 1994 NHL draft, he was acquired by Réjean Houle in March 2000 in the trade that sent Vladimir Malakhov to New Jersey.
Josh DeWolf, a defenseman who ultimately never played for the team, and a 2nd round pick in 2001, who became Andreas Holmqvist, also came to Montreal in this deal.
Sheldon Souray left a mark on many Canadiens fans and brought respect to the lineup. After 7 years and even though he initially seemed to want to stay in Quebec, he ultimately decided to accept the lucrative offer of $27 million over 5 seasons from the Edmonton Oilers.
In total, he played 758 NHL games with New Jersey, Montreal, Edmonton, Dallas, and Anaheim. He scored 109 goals and 300 points before retiring from hockey at the end of the 2012-13 season.

Today, the retired hockey player is doing very well and is a loving father to his two daughters, Valentina and Scarlett.
A few years ago, he decided to take his life back under control in order to overcome his demons. Souray himself admits his problems could have cost him his life. Fortunately, he is now sober and appreciates his life.
During the interview, the defenseman also made a touching statement about true wealth, which according to him is not money, but rather the happiness of having the love of his partner and his children.
