Former Canadiens Star Shares Thoughts on Possible Mike Matheson Trade
Since acquiring Noah Dobson, the Montreal Canadiens have found themselves with a surplus of defensemen in their organization.
Mike Matheson's name has often been linked to several trades. However, Vincent Damphousse has shared his opinion on the matter.
The Canadiens currently have 7 defensemen on their roster with the addition of Noah Dobson.
If
David Reinbacher shakes things up and earns a spot in the lineup, the Canadiens would have 8 defensemen.
The defenseman has just one year left on his contract, and it raises the question of whether the Canadiens will have room for him in two years.
However, former Stanley Cup Champion with the Montreal Canadiens Vincent Damphousse, made a revelation about Matheson's future in Montreal.
Mike Matheson Could Re-sign with the Montreal Canadiens
According to Damphousse, the Canadiens should keep Matheson if the return they get isn't high enough.
He doesn't want to trade him for just a draft pick.
"For me, you don't trade Mike Matheson for a draft pick.
He's a defenseman who was Number 1 and 2 here, and he's already signed to an extraordinary contract under $5 million.
You can't just give him away for a second-round pick."
- Vincent Damphousse
We know his role will likely be reduced this season and his ice time will decrease, but the Canadiens can definitely keep him.
If Kent Hughes wants to trade him, he needs to receive an established player in return.
Matheson will become a free agent at the end of the season, raising questions about his future with the team.
