Montreal Canadiens fans already know it very well, Samuel Montembeault is very good, but when former players turned analysts highlight his impact, it carries even more weight.
Recently, Marc Denis didn't hesitate to praise the importance of the Quebec-born goalie in the current structure of the Canadiens.
"Samuel Montembeault is the backbone of the Canadiens. He has brought the consistency the team needed," he said.
He reminded everyone that the Habs' progress depends largely on their stability in net.
The Canadiens Have Found in Samuel Montembeault the Long-Sought Stability in Net
This consistency, "Monty" has shown it game after game, making key saves and instilling confidence in his defense.
In a young team still learning to deal with the ups and downs of a long season, that's worth its weight in gold.
Indeed, since he signed a three-year contract worth $3.15 million per season, Montembeault has been a real bargain in the NHL.
I personally think Marc Denis is absolutely right. When you look at the confidence Montembeault inspires, it's clear he's at the heart of the rebuild project.
If the Canadiens can build around him with a more experienced defense, the team could take an important step forward in the coming seasons. It just remains to be seen if Hughes will be able to extend Monty's contract soon.
