The young Austrian forward Vinzenz Rohrer thought he would be able to stay a few more days in Montreal with the Canadiens during training camp.
"It was a bit of a surprise.
They told me I had a good camp and left a good impression, but they want to see me progress further. There's no hurry, I've only just turned 21."
- Vinzenz Rohrer
The 21-year-old forward explained that he still had an honest meeting with Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes after the announcement.
"I met with Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes, and they explained the context and the plan for the coming years. After that, everything made a bit more sense."
Despite the disappointing outcome, he says he's leaving with his head held high:
"They confirmed to me that I had made progress and that I had left a very good impression. At the same time, they're working on a longer-term plan with me. I just turned 21, so there's no reason to rush."

Vinzenz Rohrer wants to prove his worth before returning to Montreal
Rohrer is currently continuing his season with the Zurich Lions in the Swiss National League. He has already played four games, with no points so far.
His goal in the coming months is clear - he wants to keep developing so he can come back stronger to the Canadiens' camp in 2026.
"I want to make progress and mature my overall game, especially on the penalty kill."
This 2022 third-round pick remains confident about his future with the Habs.
I personally think his attitude and outlook are exemplary. It can't be easy to be cut earlier than expected, but he seems to be keeping his spirits up.
