The Montreal Canadiens have a very promising defensive prospect in Lane Hutson, one of their talented players in the pipeline.

We will need confirmation of his presence in the NHL after training camp, but before that, there's the development camp and rookie camp.

While we thought we would see him in action next week at development camp, that won't happen due to a request from Kent Hughes.

Indeed, as reported by Arpon Basu, the Canadiens have told Hutson to rest and prepare for rookie camp.

"Forgot to mention this in my piece yesterday but Lane Hutson said he will not be attending Canadiens development camp this week. He was told not to. He'll be at rookie camp, but Canadiens want him to rest up."

This says a lot about the organization's plans for him. For a rookie to be exempted from development camp at the team's request is quite significant.

It's true that Lane played two games last season and showed a lot of talent, but the fact that the organization wants him to rest speaks volumes.

An NHL season is long, and the Canadiens want the young defenseman to be ready for anything.

Personally, even though there's a management issue at left defense, I don't see how the Canadiens could do without Hutson this year. I believe his place is with the Canadiens, not with the Rocket.
