There are so many rumors and pieces of information circulating over the past few days surrounding the possible trade of Carey Price's contract.

In an article published late last night by journalist and insider Renaud Lavoie, he compiled the different information that has come to his ears in the past few hours and painted an overall picture of the situation.
While Renaud Lavoie does confirm that serious discussions have already taken place regarding the former goaltender of the Tricolore, he specifies that these discussions will accelerate today and tomorrow (September 2 and 3) as the various NHL GMs gather in person in Detroit.
That said, still according to Renaud, Canadiens fans will not only need to temper their expectations, they will also have to be patient. According to him, it won't be as easy as some people think for Kent Hughes.

"Carey Price absolutely must be traded," but not at any price

Although Renaud Lavoie acknowledges that trading Carey Price's contract will be absolutely essential for Kent Hughes if he hopes to make a deal that will bring a second offensive center to Montreal, he still tempers expectations.
"Kent Hughes is, in a certain way, in a position of weakness and will probably have to agree to give up a draft pick to the team that acquires Price's contract. The other general managers have no intention of giving the Canadiens a gift and I wouldn't be surprised if teams demanded a second-round pick from the Canadiens to take on Carey Price's contract. Kent Hughes will surely not be inclined to give up a second-round pick, and that's when the real negotiations will begin."

On the other hand, the journalist is convinced that the fact Gavin McKenna will be available in the next draft will work in the Canadiens' favor. GMs of weaker teams must ensure they have the flexibility to trade players early in the season while still respecting the salary floor.
"Teams that have a difficult start to the season will make sure not to waste time and will trade players with big contracts. That's where a team that fears not reaching the salary floor could be strongly interested in Carey Price's contract, which takes up $10.5M of a salary cap."

In short, all eyes will be on Detroit in the coming hours. We'll keep you updated! In the meantime, Canadiens fans can take comfort in the fact that a new candidate for the second center position is starting to stand out.
