Young Canadiens Prospect LJ Mooney Already Carving Out Key Role with New Team
The Montreal Canadiens can be pleased to see one of their young prospects already having a prime spot in the NCAA.
The young sensation LJ Mooney, drafted 113th overall in 2025, will begin the college season on the first line of the Minnesota Golden Gophers, alongside
Tanner Ludtke and
Brodie Ziemer.
For a player who is only 18 years old, this vote of confidence from his team says a lot about his talent.
Mooney had been invited to the Canadiens' rookie camp and, in my opinion, he was one of the biggest surprises.
LJ Mooney is already taking on a major role with Minnesota
During this last camp, Mooney made a strong impression with his speed and energy. When you watched him, he seemed twice as fast as the other players.
"I still get text messages from fans, it's really nice. I didn't know what to expect from them, but it's truly incredible." - LJ Mooney
Mooney will also be able to count on the presence of
Luke Mittelstadt, another Canadiens prospect and a veteran of the Golden Gophers.
The two will play together this year and I really think the veteran could help Mooney a lot in his development.
At 5 ft 7 in, he will have to prove that he can silence his detractors who think he is too small, a challenge reminiscent of
Lane Hutson and
Cole Caufield.
In my opinion, seeing Mooney start on the first line is a sign that this young player has already earned respect in a very competitive environment.
