Carter Hart and the 2018 Canadian WJC team were acquitted, but Gary Bettman and the NHL say they're still ineligible. The situation remains unresolved.
The news spread quickly over the last few hours: the members of the 2018 Canadian team are officially not guilty.
Of course, one name is now drawing most of the attention-goaltender Carter Hart, who was once considered one of the top goaltending prospects and the trusted netminder for the Philadelphia Flyers.
Due to this case, the organization decided not to extend him a qualifying offer in the summer of 2023, and he is now free to sign with any team of his choosing.
"The allegations made in this case, even if not determined to have been criminal, were very disturbing and the behavior at issue was unacceptable. We will be reviewing and considering the judge's findings. While we conduct that analysis and determine next steps, the players charged in this case are ineligible to play in the League."
Furthermore, no member of the Oilers organization has publicly commented on the situation so far, and it is unclear whether Edmonton truly intends to bring Carter Hart into their ranks.
The NHL Players' Association is furious and is contesting the decision made by Gary Bettman and the National Hockey League
The NHL's decision has sparked outrage from the NHL Players' Association, which claims that it is incompatible with the disciplinary procedures outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.
A statement has just been released, and this story is far from over.
Dillon Dube, Cal Foote, Alex Formenton, Carter Hart, and Michael McLeod have been acquitted of all charges by Justice Carroccia of the Ontario Superior Court.
»Dillon Dube, Cal Foote, Alex Formenton, Carter Hart, and Michael McLeod were acquitted of all charges by Justice Carroccia of the Ontario Superior Court," the NHLPA stated. "After missing more than a full season of their respective NHL careers, they should now have the opportunity to return to work. The NHL's declaration that the Players are 'ineligible' to play pending its further analysis of the Court's findings is inconsistent with the discipline procedures set forth in the CBA.» - NHL Players' Association
After missing more than a full season of their respective NHL careers, the NHLPA believe they should now have the opportunity to return to work.
