Turnaround among the CH's goaltender: already an agreement close to $10M for Samuel Montembeault?

The excellent journalist Marc-Antoine Godin of The Athletic raised a very interesting point in his most recent article about Samuel Montembeault.

He mentions a possible contract extension for the Quebec goalltender as early as this summer, even though he technically has another season to run on his current agreement.



To complete Godin's comments, it should be noted that Monty will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of next season.


However, since he should act as the starting goaltender for the next campaign, it might be wise to sign him in advance, in order to limit a potential increase in his salary, if he were to perform as a true number one next year.

Currently signed for $1.0M per season, it's clear that he will deserve a considerable salary increase, especially if he's in goal for more than half of the CH's games.

In short, it would look like a two-to-three-season agreement, with an annual salary of around $3.0M.

If Kent Hughes wishes to agree to a longer term (4 years or more), it's very likely that this annual amount will increase further to approach $4.0M.

At 26 years old, Montembeault played 40 games in 2022-2023, accumulating a record of 16 wins, 19 losses, and 3 overtime losses. He maintained a goals against average of 3.42 and a save percentage of .901.
