We're used to Martin St-Louis defending his players, and honestly, we love to see that. Increasingly, the coach is able to speak up when things aren't going well and also highlight the positive side.
When asked about Cole Caufield's production, who has only scored 7 goals since the beginning of the year, St-Louis made a statement that is not unanimously accepted among fans.
Caufield is a goal scorer. As Jacques Demers used to say about Vincent Damphousse: "He's paid to put it in, so let him put it in." So, there's an expectation that he contributes more offensively.
For St-Louis, there's absolutely nothing wrong; quite the opposite. Cole is much better in other aspects of the game. He claims that Caufield's defensive play has improved, and his physicality too.
The coach defends his statements by saying that Cole still knows how to score goals and that he will score plenty more. He suggests that Caufield could have twice as many goals this year, and no one would even be talking about it.
