Arpon Basu sends a powerful message to Juraj Slafkovsky and he's right
Kent Hughes has the heavy task of strengthening the Canadiens' top 6 in the short term, but he'll soon have other important matters on his plate.
Indeed, contract extensions for his young players will become crucial, and the GM is well aware of that. This is precisely why he's cautious, even though he has plenty of cap space.
Both Kaiden Guhle and Juraj Slafkovsky will need new deals in 2025-26, but they are eligible to sign extensions as early as July 1, 2024.
It's understood that these two players are part of the team's core, and Hughes has a strong interest in signing them long-term.
Regarding Slaf, Arpon Basu summarized the situation well and what the Canadiens will inevitably present to him. He also delivers a poignant and truthful message to him.
"I think they're gonna sell Slaf on how Nick & Cole signed these deals, they're in. Imagining the Habs pitch, we want you to be in too. We want you to be with them, at that number more or less. Cole accepted it.' That's what they're aiming for."
According to Arpon, the Canadiens will likely appeal to Slaf's emotions, but they need to be cautious. If Kent Hughes waits too long and Juraj has a superb season, it will become increasingly challenging.
However, I'm sure that Basu's arguments will be taken into consideration by Slaf. When you watch him play with Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki, it's clear that he's having a lot of fun and wants to stay with them.
