It is now confirmed for Kent Hughes and the trade market: the Canadiens are in the mix
Kent Hughes had been discreet on the trade market until last week when he acquired Patrik Laine in exchange for defenseman Jordan Harris.
It was believed that his summer would be fairly conservative, but as usual, the Canadiens' general manager completed a trade in the middle of August.
Not only is the Finnish player arriving in Montreal fired up, but he might not be the only acquisition for the Canadiens. Alex Barré-Boulet was also added, but the chances of him playing in Montreal are quite slim, at least at the start of the season.
According to Renaud Lavoie, the rumors about several players were true, and Kent Hughes really did try to acquire them.
"It's rumored behind the scenes that the Montreal Canadiens were among the teams that tried to get goaltender
Yaroslav Askarov. And over the summer, rumors linked the Canadiens to
Rutger McGroarty,
Martin Necas, and
Trevor Zegras.
For all the names you just mentioned (Martin Necas, Patrik Laine, and Yaroslav Askarov), there were discussions with the Canadiens about a trade."
- Renaud Lavoie
So it's confirmed that Kent Hughes did indeed have discussions with the Jets, Hurricanes, Ducks, and Predators, but nothing came to fruition. In fact, only Rutger McGroarty and Yaroslav Askarov changed teams.
On this subject, Lavoie notes that Kent Hughes might be a bit less insistent since the acquisition of Patrik Laine, but he is still actively working the phones to try to complete another transaction.
The GM's intentions are very clear, and he is determined to make the Canadiens competitive right from this year.
