Acquisition by Kent Hughes: Tyler Toffoli returning to the Canadiens?
Tyler Toffoli certainly left a strong impression during his time with the Montreal Canadiens.
Signed for four years by Marc Bergevin, the forward was ultimately traded by Kent Hughes, but not due to his attitude or performance on the ice.
Toffoli was highly regarded by the new administration, but his departure was necessary for the team's rebuilding efforts. He had explained this clearly after the announcement of his trade.
Indeed, Kent Hughes took the time to explain the reasons to him personally, which speaks highly of him.
Presently at Jake Evans' wedding with his former teammates, Toffoli and his wife have never hidden their love for Montreal and Quebec, often returning for vacations.
Arpon Basu also shared his thoughts on Toffoli's possible return to the Canadiens, which makes a lot of sense.
"He has proven over the past few years that he is a remarkably consistent goal scorer. He scored over 30 goals in each of his last two seasons, which are his two best goal-scoring seasons of his career.
Furthermore, I think Tyler Toffoli enjoyed his time in Montreal [...] maybe the Canadiens could make it work.
Four years is not excessive, although I think it's a bit longer than what the Canadiens would prefer for a free agent.
If he is willing to accept a four-year contract, then yes, Kent Hughes should at least inquire to see if they can find common ground to bring him back to Montreal." - Arpon Basu
Toffoli scored over 30 goals in each of his last two seasons, in addition to being a quality mentor up front and not costing too much. His last contract was $4.25 million per season, which represented a decrease from his previous deal.
He would certainly be a great addition to bolster the 2nd or 3rd line. He brings depth and is exactly the veteran profile the Canadiens are looking for to support their young players.
