Beloved Canadiens Broadcaster Pierre Houde's Future Uncertain After Recent Interview
In a sports media market undergoing major upheaval, the broadcast of Canadiens games by French-language specialty channels like RDS and TVA Sports is under threat.
Already, last season, Amazon Prime began broadcasting NHL games (including some Canadiens games), and most of the world's major sports leagues have signed deals with online streaming platforms.
It is in this context that Pierre Houde seems unsure about what the future holds for him at the end of the next season.
Will Pierre Houde be calling Canadiens games in 2025-2026? His most recent statement raises concern
Here's what the beloved commentator of the Canadiens' French-speaking fans had to say to journalist Bill Brownstein.
"For now, we are waiting, and I don't know if I will be able to commentate on games in the future. On the positive side, RDS has renewed its rights for F1 for the coming years. I am so honored to have worked 50 years in this profession, but I still want to continue a little. How long, I don't know. F1 is good for me now. We'll see what happens with hockey. I always keep hope."
-Pierre Houde, in the Montreal Gazette
This lengthy interview, published this morning in Quebec's main English-language newspaper, unfortunately does not bode well for RDS and, indirectly, TVA Sports.
The two main players in the Quebec television market are financially struggling, and it will be difficult for them to compete with Amazon, Netflix, and other similar platforms.
Let's at least hope that these companies have the sense to hire Pierre Houde if they acquire the broadcasting rights on their own.
