The famous Montreal Canadiens golf tournament not only helped launch the 2025-2026 season for our favorite team, but it also led to a series of honest questions and answers with team management.
Interviewed by Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports, Kent Hughes had to juggle a delicate question:
one revolving around a star center he wasn't allowed to name publicly.. ahem, wink wink, Sidney Crosby. These days in the NHL, openly talking about a player who belongs to another team can be considered tampering.
So Hughes had to remain cautious, but he still managed to give an answer that says a lot about his intentions.
Kent Hughes Is Keeping His Cards Ready for a Big Move
During this exchange, reported by
TVA Sports, Hughes explained his approach quite clearly.
"That's always the case, it will always be the case. If you want to improve your team, you have to have the assets to make the trade. Otherwise, you have to maintain cap flexibility." - Kent Hughes
I must admit I was pleasantly surprised to see Hughes being so honest.
To rephrase, even though he couldn't say Crosby's name, he clearly hinted that he is laying the groundwork to make a major move if a star player ever becomes available.
Of course, as always, it all depends on the price.
The general manager also reminded everyone that every decision the organization makes is not just for today, but also for the future.
The trade of
Carey Price's contract to the San Jose Sharks perfectly illustrates this logic. The goal was to free up cap space to remain flexible if an exceptional opportunity arises.
And for the fans, nothing would be more exceptional than seeing Crosby in a Canadiens jersey!
On the other hand, Hughes' comments confirm that he doesn't want to be caught off guard.
In my opinion, this is exactly what fans wanted to hear: a GM who keeps his options open. How lucky we are to have a GM so dedicated and willing to take calculated risks!
