The Carey Price situation reached an expected conclusion last week with the departure of the Montreal Canadiens goalie contract in a trade with the San Jose Sharks.

While this move was seen as a favor from Price to the organization, it is primarily Kent Hughes' strategic management that draws attention.
On The Sick Podcast with Tony Marinaro, the topic was discussed at length, and a crucial point was raised: it was actually the Sharks who needed this trade.
By absorbing Price's contract, San Jose can more easily reach the NHL's salary floor.
However, according to PuckPedia, it was initially expected that the Canadiens would have to pay more to offload such a contract, possibly by giving up a second-round pick. This is where Hughes' strategy stood out.

A Highly Effective Strategy for Kent Hughes in the Carey Price Contract Trade to the Sharks

Before the trade, the Canadiens' GM had publicly stated that his team was not in a hurry to get rid of Price's contract. This message, widely shared on social media, helped reverse the negotiation dynamic.
Rather than appearing as a club desperately seeking salary relief, the Canadiens presented themselves as an organization in control, ready to retain the contract if necessary.
Result: the Sharks did not receive significant compensation and ended up with a "mere" fifth-round pick. In fact, they were the ones left with fewer leverage points, having more to gain from the trade than the Canadiens.
Once again, Kent Hughes demonstrates his ability to work magic. In a league where image and perception influence as much as numbers, the Canadiens' GM continues to pull the strings with finesse.
