Let's remember the excitement around Alexis Lafrenière at the 2020 NHL Draft. Many expected, notably because of his physical maturity, that he would have an immediate impact in the NHL.
The Rangers, who had hit the jackpot by winning the first overall pick, truly believed they had landed a cornerstone piece for their quick rebuild.
Five years later, it's fair to admit that might not be the case.

According to TSN's well-regarded journalist David Pagnotta, the Rangers are taking calls from teams interested in Alexis Lafrenière.
However, the journalist specifies that to acquire the Quebecer, the interested team will need to offer immediate reinforcement to the Rangers.
That likely means they would want to acquire a veteran more productive than Lafrenière. After all, it's hard to imagine a team offering a promising young player who would already be more productive than Lafrenière.
For those wondering, the Canadiens have nothing of the sort to offer the Blue Shirts. Kent Hughes will continue shopping for a second-line center, and Lafrenière doesn't seem to be part of his plans yet.
Alexis Lafrenière, a left winger, has accumulated 92 goals and 101 assists for a total of 193 points in 380 career NHL games.
